The choice between a managed shop and a self-hosted website is a choice about who does the recurring work. Compare updates, recovery, troubleshooting, catalogue maintenance and customer service separately. Hosting a website is only one part of keeping an ordering business dependable.

DROPS offers a hosted shop with connected catalogue, checkout and customer tools. Its appeal for a small team is a more focused operating workload. Ask exactly what the service includes and which decisions and tasks remain with your shop.

Put names against the operating jobs

A self-hosted shop can be a good fit when you have capable technical help and need control over a specific setup. A managed service can be a good fit when you want the provider to own more of the platform work. Neither label tells you the complete service scope.

Recurring job Self-hosted arrangement Managed arrangement
Software updates Owner or appointed maintainer coordinates them Confirm what the provider maintains
Backup and recovery Someone must operate and check the process Confirm recovery scope and support route
Product facts and prices Shop supplies and approves the facts Shop still supplies and approves the facts
Payment-provider eligibility Merchant and payment provider resolve it Merchant and payment provider still resolve it
Order fulfilment Shop team Shop team
Platform incident Coordinate relevant host, developer and services Confirm the provider's responsibilities and escalation

The table is a buying aid. A particular contract may allocate work differently, so compare the written service rather than the category name.

Count time as well as subscription cost

Consider a fictional weekly workload for a self-managed store: 40 minutes reviewing maintenance, 30 minutes checking recovery arrangements, 45 minutes investigating an integration issue and 35 minutes coordinating suppliers. That totals 150 minutes, or 2.5 hours.

Suppose an illustrative managed arrangement replaces those tasks with 25 minutes reviewing service issues and 20 minutes coordinating a change. That is 45 minutes, leaving a difference of 105 minutes, or 1.75 hours. This is not a DROPS time-saving claim; it shows how to calculate the value of work your proposed service would actually take on.

At an internal time value of 30 currency units per hour, that difference is 52.50 per week. It becomes relevant only when the tasks are genuinely removed and the service delivers the agreed scope. Catalogue accuracy, packing orders and customer decisions remain in the workload.

Consider how much custom work you need

A heavily customised shop may justify dedicated development. But each custom dependency should solve a real business problem. Ask who maintains it after launch, what happens during updates and how you leave the arrangement later.

For a managed setup, establish which adjustments are supported, which require a separate quote and which are outside the product. In DROPS, supported AI-assisted work can help prepare and apply approved shop actions, but it does not remove the need for an owner to approve product and commercial decisions.

Our WordPress alternative guide explores the connected-shop option in more detail.

Compare a normal week and a difficult day

Ask both providers to walk through a price change, an unavailable item and an order question. Then ask what happens when checkout is unavailable. Who receives the issue, who can act and how will the shop know the current status?

Do not buy a vague promise of “full support”. Define the service you need and compare it with ongoing shop operating costs, including your own coordination time.

See DROPS and discuss the jobs your team wants to stop carrying. Choose the arrangement that gives those jobs a clear owner and leaves you with more attention for products, customers and completed orders.
