Present pickup and delivery as clear customer choices with the relevant place, cost and timing beside each one. Then make the chosen method unmistakable in the final review. DROPS connects checkout details with the order record, helping shop staff prepare the service the customer selected and avoid chasing missing instructions after the sale.

Say what the choice changes

“Standard” and “Local” are weak labels when the customer must decide whether to travel to the shop or wait for delivery. Use the actual service name. Add a short explanation of the main consequence: collection location, delivery area, charge or readiness process.

Keep available options consistent with the shop’s real operation. Do not show pickup at a location that cannot release that order. Do not make delivery look available before the service-area decision is made.

Where eligibility depends on location, explain what the customer must enter. The delivery-zone guide covers that boundary. Here the goal is to help customers recognise the correct choice before they commit.

Use labels that answer the next question

This illustrative matrix describes a fictional shop with one pickup point and a local delivery service. It is a copy model, not a set of default DROPS settings.

Choice Main label Supporting detail
Pickup “Collect from Central shop” “Wait for your ready-to-collect update before travelling.”
Local delivery “Delivery to your address” “Check your area for availability and the delivery charge.”
Pickup unavailable for the current order “Pickup is unavailable for this basket” Explain the actual restriction and available alternative
Address outside the delivery area “Delivery is not available to this address” Offer pickup only if it is genuinely supported

Use a readiness promise your team can keep. “Order received” does not necessarily mean the bag is ready. A stated collection window should reflect the shop’s actual acceptance and preparation process.

Let customers correct the choice knowingly

Consider a fictional order of 45 with pickup selected. The customer reaches the review screen and realises they need delivery. The right correction includes more than changing a label: the address becomes relevant, delivery eligibility must be checked, and any delivery charge changes the total.

If delivery costs 6 in this example, the new total is 51 before any separately applicable tax. The customer needs to see and accept that change before paying. The reverse correction also matters: switching to pickup should not leave a delivery promise on the order summary.

Inspect this journey in the demo using the methods your shop will offer. Do not assume the checkout supports every method switch at every stage. After submission, a correction may require staff review rather than customer editing. Tell customers how to contact the shop before travelling or sending another payment.

Make fulfilment visible to the team

A completed order is only useful when the team knows what to do with it. Staff should be able to identify the selected method and the necessary service details without reconstructing the choice from a chat.

DROPS order context supports that handoff. During evaluation, compare the customer’s final review with the staff view: method, relevant location information, charge and status. Keep the interface focused on the details each person needs. A pickup order should not become a reason to collect unrelated delivery information.

For the broader form review, use checkout field requirements. Check the customer journey for each offered method rather than judging the checkout from a single successful order.

Clear choices produce orders the team can fulfil with fewer corrections. See DROPS checkout and order management and make pickup and delivery easy to choose from the start.
