Set referral rewards from the margin of a qualifying new-customer order and the total cost of both sides of the offer. A generous-looking scheme can pay the referrer, discount the new customer and leave the shop with very little. Put all three positions in the same calculation.

DROPS includes referral codes, rewards and tracking alongside the shop's customer and order records. That gives you a practical route from a recommendation to a recorded purchase. The merchant's job is to define which orders qualify, choose affordable incentives and review what the scheme brings in.

Calculate the full two-sided cost

This illustrative example uses a 70-unit merchandise order, excluding tax. The shop has 35 units in goods cost and 7 units in other variable order costs. Its contribution before referral incentives is 70 − 35 − 7 = 28.

The new customer receives a 7-unit discount. The referrer earns 6 units of credit after the qualifying order. If that credit is fully redeemed, the combined reward cost is 7 + 6 = 13, leaving 28 − 13 = 15 before fixed overhead and program administration.

Reward choice New-customer discount Referrer credit Contribution after full reward use
Option A 7 6 15
Option B 10 10 8
Option C 5 5 18

The table does not predict which option attracts the most customers. It shows how much contribution each option leaves under the same basket assumptions. Use it to rule out an offer that cannot afford to work before testing demand.

Define a qualifying order in plain language

Decide what “new customer” means for your shop and which order state earns the reward. A code entered at checkout is not necessarily a completed sale. An unpaid, cancelled or fully refunded order needs an explicit treatment.

The offer may also need a minimum qualifying merchandise value, eligible products, limits on combined promotions, and a clear rule for self-referrals. Choose only conditions you can administer reliably. Verify the available controls and identify any staff review needed; a written condition does not magically enforce itself.

Make the customer explanation short. In an illustrative scheme: “Your friend receives 7 off a qualifying first order of 70 or more. You receive 6 in shop credit after that order qualifies under the referral terms.” The actual published terms must explain the qualification point and relevant exclusions without hiding them after signup.

The referral code guide covers the shop workflow. Set the economics and rules before using that workflow to launch an offer.

Keep earned and redeemed rewards separate

In a fictional month, 40 referred orders qualify. New-customer discounts total 40 × 7 = 280, and earned referrer credit totals 40 × 6 = 240. If only 18 referrers redeem their full credit that month, current-period redemptions are 108; the remaining 132 is still outstanding under the offer's rules.

Track earned value, redeemed value and remaining obligations separately. Do not announce that the program cost only 388 merely because some earned credit has not yet been used. For conservative planning, the full 520-unit incentive value matters.

Also record how often staff resolve eligibility disputes. Ten minutes of manual work on a small order can change the result materially. A reward that is easy to understand can be more workable than one with a slightly cheaper but complicated set of exceptions.

Judge referrals after the first purchase

Review qualifying new customers, contribution after rewards, cancellations and later repeat purchases. Code attribution shows which offer was recorded; it does not prove the customer would never have found you otherwise. Keep that distinction when comparing referrals with advertising or ordinary direct traffic.

A repeat purchase can strengthen the economics, but treat it as measured later value rather than assumed lifetime revenue. Use the method in repeat purchase rate with an equal observation window for each new customer.
